A Chilean earthquake measuring 8.8 has triggered a Tsunami warning for the Pacific region and waves are expected to hit Hawaii later today (Saturday).

In this Geography in the News article from February 1998, Professor Neal Lineback discusses the concepts of Tsunamis and how an earthquake thousands of miles away can have a devastating impact.

The article references a 1960 quake – also off the coast of Chile – that sent a tsunami that hit Hawaii some 15  hours later.
